A father of two, Vinay Darshan, aged 45, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, Aleshmin Pratap, in Rakiraki in 2022. Darshan faced multiple charges, including murder, incitement to commit murder, and arson. His conviction stems from a tumultuous period in their marriage, characterized by declining relations and domestic issues, exacerbated by Pratap’s extramarital affair with a man named Ronal.
In a bid to eliminate his wife, Darshan initially approached Viliame Nayacalevu, a cane cutter, requesting him to carry out the murder. Nayacalevu, however, declined and subsequently reported Darshan’s intentions to a fellow worker. Additionally, Darshan confided in another individual, Bas Deo, revealing his plan to not only kill Pratap but also to burn her body and their home to erase any evidence.
On the fateful night of August 23, Darshan carried out his heinous act, striking Pratap twice on the head with a piece of timber before igniting the house and leaving the scene with their two children. Justice Samuela Qica, presiding over the case, mandated a minimum term of 18 years for Darshan’s actions. This tragic incident underscores the alarming issues of domestic violence and the devastating consequences that can ensue.
