Authorities in Fiji are currently investigating the hospitalization of seven guests from a popular Coral Coast hotel, which has drawn significant media attention worldwide. Speculation has arisen regarding the possibility of methanol poisoning, particularly after Australia’s travel advisory site updated its guidelines over the weekend.
The advisory, still relevant as of yesterday, cautioned travelers to be vigilant regarding risks such as drink spiking and methanol poisoning from alcoholic beverages. It emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if one suspects drink tampering.
As parallels are drawn to a recent similar incident in Laos, where methanol poisoning tragically resulted in fatalities among tourists, Fiji’s officials quickly moved to address these concerns. However, as of yesterday, the specific cause of the guests’ medical issues has yet to be identified.
Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the permanent secretary for Health, confirmed that all seven patients were transferred to Lautoka Hospital for treatment. He acknowledged that while the investigation is ongoing, there is currently no evidence directly linking the incident to methanol poisoning. Dr. Tudravu emphasized that the claims circulating did not stem from their inquiries.
“Our team is still investigating the cause,” he stated, adding that toxicology tests are being conducted by the police, who will later disclose their findings. He reiterated the uncertainty surrounding potential factors, whether drink spiking or otherwise.
Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew lent support to the notion that both his department and the Ministry of Health are collaborating on this matter.
In reaction to the situation, Warwick Fiji, the hotel where the guests were staying, refrained from providing further details, citing the absence of their general manager for comment.
Meanwhile, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade indicated that they are offering consular assistance to two Australian families involved in the case, but withheld any further details due to privacy considerations.
While the investigation is still unfolding, it is a reminder of the need for vigilance while traveling, particularly regarding health safety. In the meantime, the authorities are committed to ensuring clarity and safety for all guests in Fiji.
This incident serves as a crucial opportunity for heightened awareness about alcohol safety and the importance of immediate attention to health concerns while traveling abroad. With continued investigations, it is hoped that swift conclusions will be drawn to ensure the safety and well-being of all visitors to Fiji.
