The Ministry of Fisheries in Fiji has initiated a two-day Data Working Group Workshop as part of the nation’s commitment to the “30 by 30” global initiative, which aims to safeguard 30% of the Earth’s land and ocean by the year 2030. This gathering of experts is focused on enhancing the data that underpins conservation planning and decision-making, essential for achieving this ambitious target.
Minister Alitia Bainivalu emphasized the importance of the working group, stating that it will play a pivotal role in identifying marine areas that need protection. “This Data Working Group is therefore critical,” she remarked, adding that it serves as the technical engine for maintaining coherence across various government sectors. The collaboration involves expertise from fisheries, environment, planning, foreign affairs, industry, scientific service providers, and other significant institutions.
