A High Court session took place yesterday concerning a permanent stay application filed by former finance minister Professor Biman Prasad. The hearing was presided over by Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull, who suggested that the main hearing could be scheduled for March 18 and 19 of the following year.

Professor Prasad was represented by attorney Richard Naidu, who informed the court of his client’s intention to request an interim stay while the permanent stay application is still under consideration.

Justice Bull confirmed that the proposed hearing dates would be finalized on January 15 during a subsequent court session, which will also address another related issue involving former trade minister Manoa Kamikamica.

The application for a permanent stay faced opposition from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Despite this challenge, Mr. Naidu reaffirmed his client’s pursuit of interim relief as the court deliberates on the substantive application.

Acknowledging the arguments presented, Justice Bull adjourned the matter to January 15, where the court is expected to establish hearing dates for both cases. This development underlines the ongoing legal challenges faced by public figures in Fiji and highlights the judicial process that provides them a platform for their appeals.
