The Fijian Government has reaffirmed its decision to remain uninvolved in the management and operations of the Miss Fiji Pageant. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka clarified this stance amidst allegations made by Peggy Ravusiro, the current Miss Fiji, against the pageant committee and its director.

Rabuka emphasized that the role of the Cabinet is confined to determining the level of government support for the event and should not interfere in the pageant’s administration. Local Government and Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa also expressed his lack of knowledge regarding the specific accusations directed at his senior staff or municipal administrators. He pointed out that there exists a committee in charge of overseeing the pageant.

Nalumisa stated, “As far as I am concerned, the committee has followed all due process in selecting Miss Fiji and in ensuring that the representative truly reflects Fiji.” He noted that if contestants feel uneasy about signing contracts, these concerns are acknowledged, allowing them appropriate time to make informed decisions before continuing to the next phase of the competition.

In response to emerging calls for the abolishment of beauty pageants due to concerns over the exploitation of women, Nalumisa defended their purpose, suggesting that these events can indeed empower women. He highlighted the evolving focus of beauty pageants, which now emphasizes opportunities for women to address critical issues through enhanced media visibility and public engagement.

“The event guarantees significant attendance and media coverage, which can aid in raising awareness on various topics. Most importantly, it serves to promote women’s empowerment,” Nalumisa remarked, reinforcing the idea that beauty pageants can serve as platforms for women to voice their advocacy.

This reaffirmation of the pageantry’s role in society showcases a commitment to both empowerment and responsible management, aiming to balance tradition with contemporary social values.
