Shakeel Pillay and Raina Kumar capped off the 2025 golf season with impressive victories at the Western Amateur Championship, held last Saturday at the Denarau Golf Club. Both players, recognized as the top talents in Fiji this year, celebrated the conclusion of this significant event on Golf Fiji’s 2025 calendar, which has been marked by numerous achievements in the sport.
Amitesh Chandra, president of Golf Fiji, praised the progress achieved during the season, emphasizing that 2025 marked a pivotal year for junior sensation Raina, who made history by becoming the first female golfer from Fiji to attain a world ranking. Chandra noted Raina’s recent participation in a training camp in New Zealand and her upcoming trip in February to compete in the prestigious Ladies Asia-Pacific Golf Event.
Similarly, Shakeel Pillay has seen remarkable growth in his performance, skyrocketing from a world ranking of approximately 4000 at the start of the year to around 1000, with further improvements anticipated in the forthcoming ranking updates.
Chandra also highlighted that Golf Fiji organized a record six world-ranking tournaments this year, contributing around $20,000 to affiliated clubs for development initiatives. “It has been a great year for Golf Fiji overall,” he concluded, reflecting on the achievements that have set a positive trajectory for the sport moving forward. This successful season showcases the dedication and talent present in Fiji’s golfing community, promising exciting prospects for the future.
