In the mid-1990s, the Fiji Games began establishing themselves as a key event in the national sporting calendar, with aspirations to diversify beyond traditional track and field competitions. The inception of a national sports festival originated in the early 1980s, initially proposed by former FASANOC president, Captain Stan Brown, alongside Bobby Tikaram, a member of the Fiji Sports Council.
FASANOC reignited this vision in 1993, leading to the inaugural Fiji Games held in August 1994. The Games aimed to provide various opportunities: for national federations to compete, to identify athletic talent from across Fiji, to facilitate selection for upcoming Olympic Games in Atlanta and the 1997 South Pacific Mini Games in American Samoa, as well as other regional and international events. Moreover, the event was designed to train technical officials through collaboration with international federations, enhance team management and coaching capabilities, and strengthen the local sports administration.
After reviewing the first Games, FASANOC established an organizing committee in 1995, chaired by Vidhya Lakhan, to oversee the planning of the second edition of the event. Regular meetings with national sports federations were conducted to strategize competition programming and necessary support services for the large multisport event.
Participating teams were comprised of district sports councils and associations from diverse regions, including Rotuma, Kadavu, and Lau, which were not typically represented in other tournaments.
Funding for the second Fiji Games was sourced from FASANOC’s corporate sponsorship initiatives featuring prominent supporters like ASCO Motors, ATS, Burns Phillip, FINTEL, Fiji Gas, FM96/Navtaran, National Bank of Fiji, SPR Videotape, and Suva Travelodge, in addition to anticipated revenue from the 1996 Prime Minister’s Dinner, the Fiji Sports Council, and the Ministry of Sport.
The endorsement from the International Olympic Committee under its Sport For All Programme bolstered FASANOC’s initiatives, symbolizing high-level international support for their endeavors. The commitment to excellence echoed through the sports community of Fiji as they prepared for a successful second installment of the Games, showcasing the resilience and dedication of athletes in the pursuit of sporting excellence.
The Fiji Games highlight the unity and talent within the nation, reflecting a vibrant sporting culture that thrives on competition and cooperation. As these Games continue to evolve, they serve not only as a platform for showcasing athletic prowess but also as a community event promoting camaraderie and national pride.
