Fiji’s futsal landscape is set for an exciting transformation, particularly in 2025, according to national coach Jerry Sam. Following the highly competitive Extra Supermarket Futsal Inter-District Championship (IDC), Sam expressed his admiration for the players’ performances and emphasized the importance of investment in the sport for its growth.

Sam thanked Extra Supermarket for sponsoring the tournament, noting that such support is essential for the development of futsal in the country. He highlighted the necessity to prepare for upcoming tournaments, including several OFC futsal championships and the club championship that Fiji will host next year.

The coach is eager to cultivate young talent, having identified potential players during the IDC who will be invited to a training camp planned for March, aiming to assemble a squad of 30 players. He also extended an invitation for an open trial next year for those who did not participate in the IDC, encouraging aspiring players to showcase their skills.

Futsal IDC champions Suva will compete at the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) championship in Suva, where Sam has offered to lend his expertise to the team if needed. He plans to focus on identifying young, active players who can sustain the intensity of a 40-minute match.

With a training regimen that will last almost six weeks, Sam anticipates finalizing a squad of about 20 players to prepare for the challenges ahead. This proactive approach to nurturing talent suggests a bright future for Fijian futsal, in which emerging athletes will make their mark on the international stage.

Overall, Fiji is poised to witness a significant evolution in its futsal capabilities, driven by dedicated coaching and community support. This commitment could lead to greater success in regional competitions, fostering a vibrant sports culture in the nation.
