Fiji is stepping up its efforts to combat transnational crime, particularly drug trafficking, by fortifying security partnerships with France and bolstering its own policing capabilities. The recent surge in cocaine seizures in French territories has prompted increased calls for enhanced border security across the Pacific. Fiji’s Policing Minister, Ioane Naivalurua, has emphasized the country’s vulnerability to exploitations by international criminal syndicates capitalizing on its porous maritime borders.
In recent parliamentary discussions, Mr. Naivalurua highlighted the need for sophisticated cooperation to tackle the overwhelming challenges posed by transnational crime, stating, “Criminal syndicates exploit our vast maritime domain and limited law enforcement resources to move illicit commodities across the region and beyond.” He underscored that Fiji is not alone in this struggle, and a collective response with regional partners is crucial for developing comprehensive tactics against these issues.
The partnership with France is particularly significant due to its history of addressing large-scale drug trafficking. For context, French authorities seized an unprecedented 40 tonnes of cocaine last year, highlighting the necessity for robust international collaboration. Fiji plans to formalize this cooperation, focusing on sharing expertise and strengthening operational capacities, particularly through specialized training for its police forces and the Counter Narcotics Bureau.
This partnership follows earlier initiatives wherein Fiji has been recognized as a critical transit hub in international drug trade networks. The recent acknowledgment came after alarming drug busts in Spain where packages labeled “Fiji” were found, indicating the country’s precarious position in the drug supply chain. Reinforcing its commitment, Fiji is actively working to bolster its maritime surveillance and response strategies in collaboration with international allies.
