Fiji football star Roy Krishna has made a heartfelt appeal to all district representatives to stay clear of drugs, emphasizing the detrimental effects that substance abuse has on the sport and its players. Notably, during various tournaments, the Fiji Football Association (FFA) has reported positive drug tests among players, signaling an urgent need for improvement and a drug-free environment in Fijian football.

Krishna, who serves as the national football captain and has experience in the Indian Super League, underscored the implications of drug use not just on players’ careers but also on their families and communities. “In sports, drugs is a no-no, so I hope and pray that this tournament is drug-free,” he stated. He passionately urged his teammates, “Drugs will not take you anywhere,” reinforcing the message that the consequences are far-reaching, affecting personal lives and professional aspirations.

Krishna’s remarks come at a crucial time as the FFA intensifies efforts to combat drug use within the sport. Just a year ago, a staggering 21 players tested positive for substances during the FMF Inter District Championship, representing a significant increase and a worrying trend in Fijian football. The FFA is committed to addressing these issues through drug testing and education initiatives aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug use.

With the Extra Battle of the Giants tournament being hosted at Subrail Park, which marks its return after 23 years, Krishna has expressed hope that the event will encourage fans to come out and support their local teams while also fostering a healthy sporting environment. He believes that by ensuring a drug-free tournament, players can compete fairly, allowing young talents to shine.

As Fiji continues to grapple with the challenge of drug abuse in sports, Krishna’s appeal reflects a broader commitment across various sporting bodies in the country to prioritize health, responsibility, and integrity. These collective efforts are aiming for a healthier sporting culture, embodying values that not only benefit the game but also inspire the next generation of athletes.

By fostering such initiatives and focusing on drug prevention, there is hope for a future where athletes can thrive in a clean, fair environment, reinforcing the significance of sports as a platform for positive influence and community engagement.
