The Fiji Football team is gearing up for the vital FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers, under the guidance of head coach Rob Sherman. The squad has begun their training camp at the Fiji Football Association Academy in Ba, with the anticipation building for their semi-final match against New Zealand.

Coach Sherman has assembled a robust group of 26 players, featuring a blend of seasoned athletes and emerging talents. “We have a talented mix of experienced players and emerging talent,” Sherman expressed. He emphasized the focus on meticulous preparation for the challenges ahead, acknowledging New Zealand’s reputation as a formidable opponent.

Among the squad, 13 players will be based overseas; six have already secured their positions, while seven others are being evaluated through trials in Auckland. The team also benefits from a strong foundation of domestic players drawn from various clubs across Fiji.

In the goalkeeping department, the team will depend on the proven skills of Simione Tamanisau, Akuila Mateisuva, and Joela Biuvanua. The defense is reinforced by Filipe Baravilala, Samuela Navoce, and Simione Nabenu, while the midfield will be led by Setareki Hughes, Merril Nand, and Tevita Waranivalu. The forwards set to put pressure on rival defenses include Sairusi Nalaubu, Penisoni Tirau, and Christopher Wasasala.

Notable overseas-based players confirmed in the squad include Thomas Dunn, Sterling Vasconcellos, Jerome Narayan, Scott Wara, Nabil Begg, and Leroy Jennings. The upcoming trials in Auckland will give players like Semi Nabenu from Auckland FC’s extended squad, and others from various clubs a critical opportunity to earn their place in the final lineup.

The team will embark on an intensive training camp in Auckland on March 1, with their critical match against New Zealand scheduled for March 21 at Sky Stadium in Wellington.

As the Fijian squad prepares, there is a sense of optimism within the camp. With a well-rounded team and strategic planning, they stand ready to seize the opportunity and showcase their talent on the international stage.
