Fiji Football has celebrated an exciting year filled with significant achievements in international competitions. Mohammed Yusuf, the chief executive of the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA), proclaimed 2024 as the busiest year for Fijian football, highlighting participation in 13 overseas tournaments and three hosted events in Fiji.

A historic achievement was accomplished by the Fiji under-19 women’s team, the Digicel Young Kulas, as they became the first Fijian women’s team ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup, representing the nation at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. Despite the daunting competition, their participation marked an important milestone for women’s football in Fiji.

The Fiji Digicel U16 Boys also made waves by qualifying for the FIFA U17 World Cup, set to take place in Qatar next year. This success indicates the strength and potential of Fiji’s youth football programs, prompting significant support and resources to assure ideal preparations for the tournament.

Adding to the accomplishments, the Labasa women’s team excelled in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Women’s Champions League, achieving a semifinal finish after a surprising victory against Auckland United. Their solid performance signifies the rising standard of women’s football in Fiji.

Furthermore, the national men’s team, known as the Digicel Bula Boys, recorded 17 matches in 2024, a record number, setting the stage for their upcoming semifinal match against New Zealand in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers in March 2025.

This year has been a transformative one for Fiji Football, laying a strong foundation for even more successes in 2025 and beyond. The progression of both women’s and men’s football illustrates the dedication and growing talent within the nation’s teams, providing hope for continued advancements in future international competitions.

In summary, Fiji’s remarkable achievements in 2024 not only highlight past success but also ignite excitement for the future as the nation’s football programs continue to grow and excel on the world stage.
