As inter-island travel and maritime activities surge during the festive season, it is essential for travelers to exercise heightened caution, according to Ro Filipe Tuisawau, Fiji’s Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport. Emphasizing the importance of safety at sea, Ro Filipe instructed the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) to intensify its enforcement measures and monitoring efforts throughout this busy period, ensuring that all maritime safety regulations are strictly followed.

Vessel operators have been reminded to adhere to all safety protocols, particularly regarding approved passenger capacity limits. The Ministry is urging the public to practice ‘due diligence’ and take all necessary precautionary measures when journeying to maritime islands during this festive period. It is particularly important for travelers not to pressure MSAF officers and operators when capacity limits are met.

Minister Tuisawau encouraged the community to celebrate responsibly while prioritizing safety as they enjoy the holiday season with loved ones. Last week, MSAF officers carefully monitored the MV Yavirau, which was destined for Lakeba, Nayau, and Namuka, ensuring that it did not exceed its approved capacity and that all safety requirements were satisfied. Similar oversight was carried out for other vessels, including the Lomaiviti Princess VII, headed for Rotuma, and the Lady Daya, traveling to Kadavu.

The MSAF expressed gratitude to the traveling public for their cooperation, highlighting the collective responsibility needed to ensure safety during this high-traffic time. As families and friends come together for the festivities, abiding by safety regulations will foster a more secure and enjoyable holiday experience for everyone involved.
