A vibrant showcase of Fijian fashion took place last Wednesday in Sydney, encapsulated by The Pacific Intruders event. This remarkable fashion event, featuring a fresh wave of Fijian designers, welcomed industry insiders, buyers, stylists, and media from around the globe. The showcase was made possible through a European Union initiative designed to globalize Fijian fashion, where €69,000 was awarded to Fiji Fashion Week to cultivate international platforms for local talent.
The runway displayed the innovative works of seven standout Fijian designers—Anton Conway Wye, Hilda Mondo, Jerry Qiolevu, Nicholas Kama, Shane Pickering, Su Samuels, and Rosie Semisi Emberson—who showcased collections that adeptly blended rich cultural heritage with contemporary design. Their work drew an enthusiastic response from the audience, marking a pivotal moment for Fijian fashion.
“This isn’t just a runway—it’s a turning point,” stated Ellen Whippy-Knight, Managing Director of Fiji Fashion Week. She emphasized that these designers are not merely seeking attention but are boldly claiming their space within the fashion landscape.
The designers benefitted from an intensive mentorship program led by fashion experts Lucy Jones and Paul Rider. Their guidance has played a crucial role in refining the designers’ creations to meet international standards, preparing them for a global market.
The support from the EU was highlighted by Ambassador Barbara Plinkert, who remarked on the importance of promoting cultural diversity and identity, stating that such initiatives help bolster the creative industries in Fiji, leading to job creation and income generation.
Designer Anton Conway Wye recounted the excitement of the event, mentioning, “We rocked up to Sydney for a fashion show in the most unexpected spot, a church turned runway. The models slayed, the setup was next level, and our Pacific-inspired pieces definitely turned some heads.”
Looking ahead, these designers are set to return home to showcase their now globally acknowledged collections during Vodafone Fiji Fashion Week 2025, scheduled for this upcoming Friday and Saturday. This homecoming is not just a presentation of their creations but a celebration of connecting local roots with international reach.
The event was supported by major sponsors including Vodafone Fiji, Pure Fiji, Ere Perez, and Davroe, enhancing the allure and impact of the runway displays. Special acknowledgments were also given to stylist Emma Cotterill and the production team for their contributions.
As the excitement from Sydney transitions back to Fiji, one thing is clear: Pacific fashion is emerging onto the world stage, and the momentum established by The Pacific Intruders will undoubtedly foster future collaborations and growth for Fijian designers.
