Grief has enveloped a family in Nakini, Naitasiri, following the tragic news of Anaseini Nai Waqavuki, a 47-year-old mother who was allegedly killed in Australia. Ms. Waqavuki left Fiji in 2018 in search of dignity and employment, undertaking a journey that would ultimately end in violence. Reports indicate that she sustained fatal stab wounds alongside a man who was found at the scene in Sydney.

The heart-wrenching news rippled through her family, bringing profound sorrow to her three children, aged 17, 14, and 12, who now face an uncertain future without their mother. They were informed of her untimely demise by a relative in Australia before Australian authorities reached out to the family.

Ms. Waqavuki dedicated herself to her children, often sending money back home to support them while she worked as a care nurse in Sydney. Her mother, Saini Waqavuki, 65, has stated that there was no romantic involvement between her daughter and the man found with her. Instead, the family is left grappling with shock and numerous questions surrounding the violent circumstances of her death.

As the family mourns, a grandmother prepares to travel to Australia with her grandchildren to lay Anaseini to rest—a painful journey that reflects both loss and the enduring love of a mother’s sacrifice. Despite the tragedy, the family’s commitment to honor her memory and ensure her children’s welfare brings a glimmer of hope amidst the heartache.
