Fiji’s maritime sector is facing significant scrutiny as safety concerns and compliance violations rise within the shipping industry. Recent incidents, including a passenger vessel running aground in the Lau Islands and a high-speed ferry halted at Suva Wharf due to regulatory issues, have put pressure on the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF). Joeli Cawaki, the CEO of MSAF, acknowledged that the authority is lagging years behind in addressing these shipping incidents, raising fears among the public regarding maritime safety.

In addition to maritime issues, the e-ticketing system for public transport in Fiji, which began in 2017, continues to face challenges that hinder its effectiveness for users. The Consumer Council of Fiji has voiced strong concerns about the frustrations commuters are experiencing with the e-ticketing system, especially since the discontinuation of disposable cards has left many without backup payment options during outages. Consumers have reported being denied access to buses when drivers refuse other forms of payment.

Seema Shandil, CEO of the Consumer Council of Fiji, emphasized that while the digital transformation is a positive step towards a cashless society, the urgent need for accessible alternatives is critical. The council is calling for a nationwide review of the e-ticketing system’s functionality and fairness to ensure it meets the needs of all residents, particularly the elderly and those living in rural areas.

There are discussions underway to improve the e-ticketing system, with users looking forward to the introduction of a new app that will allow commuters to track their balances and facilitate top-ups using mobile payment options. These developments, supported by efforts from various stakeholders including Vodafone and the Land Transport Authority, signal a hopeful trajectory towards a more user-friendly transportation experience.

The community remains optimistic that addressing these challenges head-on will lead to safer maritime travel and a more effective public transport system, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life for Fiji’s residents. This ongoing dialogue and commitment to improvements showcase a proactive approach toward resolving the sector’s issues, fostering a safer and more efficient transportation network for all.
