In the first half of this year, Fiji has reported 489 teenage pregnancies, with eight cases involving girls under the age of 15. Assistant Minister for Health, Penioni Ravunawa, emphasizes the need for increased awareness to protect young girls and strengthen family values. Teenage pregnancies pose significant health risks as young girls are not fully developed to handle childbirth, creating an enormous challenge for health facilities.

Ravunawa highlights the availability of free family planning services at public hospitals and stresses that both young girls and boys need to learn about such resources. While he does not advocate for sex outside marriage, he acknowledges the impact of globalization, the internet, and media on young people. Medical Services Pacific Clinical Manager, Sereana Bulivakarua, notes that despite some educational efforts, many girls remain uninformed about sexual and reproductive health. The organization aims to guide young women to make informed choices, prevent unwanted pregnancies, and pursue their education.

Prior discussions have pointed to insufficient reproductive health education and harmful media influences, leading to risky behaviors among youth. Between 2016 and 2019, around 1,000 teenage girls became mothers annually, highlighting the urgency for effective sexual health education. Advocacy groups continue to call for comprehensive education in schools to address this ongoing issue.

Despite the challenges, there is hope for progress. Efforts to educate and provide resources can lead to a more informed generation, capable of making healthier life choices. This approach not only aims to reduce the prevalence of teenage pregnancies but also fosters community development and a shift towards positive societal norms regarding sexual health and reproductive rights. Ultimately, equipping young people with the necessary knowledge and resources holds promise for a healthier and more responsible future in Fiji.
