The Fijian government is being urged to revise its tobacco control laws to better address the growing usage of e-cigarettes (vapes) among its citizens. Andrew Black, the coordinator for the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) secretariat, raised critical concerns during a recent joint assessment on tobacco control in Fiji, noting a significant rise in e-cigarette consumption which poses risks due to their high nicotine levels and appealing flavors aimed at younger individuals.

Black stressed the importance of regulatory action, advocating for either a ban on e-cigarettes or the implementation of strict regulations similar to those governing traditional tobacco products. He emphasized, “The very first aim of the Government is to keep them out of the hands of kids in the first place.” This concern about e-cigarettes aligns with broader discussions focused on strengthening Fiji’s tobacco control framework.

Health experts have pointed out the urgency for tighter regulations on all tobacco products, including traditional forms like suki. Reports indicate that Fiji suffers from a severe tobacco epidemic, with more than 1,200 tobacco-related deaths each year and significant economic losses estimated at $319 million, which accounts for 2.7% of the national GDP.

The collaborative efforts between the WHO and local stakeholders showcase a commitment to enhancing public health policies and confronting the tobacco crisis. By bolstering regulations and launching awareness campaigns about all forms of tobacco, especially among the youth, Fiji aims to move towards a healthier future.

As these discussions progress, there is optimism that effective tobacco control measures can help lower smoking rates and alleviate health burdens, promoting a more productive and healthier population. The commitment from health authorities and international organizations is encouraging in the fight against tobacco-related health issues.
