The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi has issued a heavy rain alert for various regions of Fiji as an active trough of low pressure persists over the islands. This alert, announced at 5:30 AM on January 1, 2026, encompasses the Northern Division, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands. It also extends to the eastern and interior parts of Viti Levu, covering areas from Momi to Navua, Suva, Nausori, and Rakiraki, as well as the interior regions of Ba, Ra, Nadroga-Navosa, Serua, Namosi, Naitasiri, and Tailevu North.

Forecasts indicate that associated cloudiness and rain will move eastward, impacting much of the country throughout the day. The Centre has warned that occasional rain and thunderstorms could particularly affect the highlighted areas, and there’s a risk of persistent heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone communities.

While the rain is expected to transition to lighter showers later in the day, authorities emphasize the importance of remaining vigilant. The public is encouraged to stay updated through official channels, avoid traversing flooded areas, and reconsider any non-essential travel during intense rainfall periods.

Fishermen and individuals residing near rivers and streams are advised to exercise heightened caution as conditions may remain hazardous. The timely warnings from the weather authorities aim to minimize risk and ensure the safety of residents and visitors across Fiji during this adverse weather event.
