A heavy rain alert has been issued for several regions in Fiji due to the approaching Tropical Disturbance 09F, which is currently moving southward toward the islands. The affected areas include the Northern division, the Yasawa group, Lau, Lomaiviti, Kadavu, and the eastern half of Viti Levu, from Sigatoka to Ra.
According to the Nadi weather office, this tropical disturbance is located far northeast of Fiji and is expected to enter Fiji waters by Sunday, potentially developing into a Tropical Depression. The Fiji Meteorological Service anticipates strong winds, with gusts approaching near-gale force, alongside an active trough that will bring rain starting tomorrow.
Residents in these regions should brace for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, which could result in flash flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. It’s important to note that while such weather can create difficulties, the rainfall is also beneficial for replenishing water supplies and supporting agricultural activities.
Communities are urged to remain vigilant, follow safety precautions, and stay updated on the weather situation as it evolves. Previous weather alerts had also covered the western and northern regions, underscoring the changes in weather patterns that Fiji commonly experiences. These reminders highlight the importance of preparedness during such events, which can have both adverse and beneficial effects on the environment.
While the heavy rain warning may seem concerning, it also emphasizes the need for residents to be proactive in reviewing their safety plans and staying in touch with local authorities for pertinent updates.
