Diabetes Fiji Inc. is amplifying its call for increased public awareness, early detection, and robust community support to tackle what it deems one of Fiji’s most urgent health crises. The organization reports that diabetes affects over one-third of the Fijian population, with many individuals remaining unaware of their condition.
Complications arising from unmanaged diabetes can lead to severe adverse health outcomes, including blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, and amputations; over 80% of these complications are linked to diabetes. “This is not just a statistic — these are our parents, siblings, children, workmates, and friends,” the organization stated, emphasizing the deep impact diabetes has on families and communities.
Diabetes Fiji stressed the collective responsibility in managing this chronic condition, which requires cooperation among families, healthcare providers, workplaces, and community leaders. It advocates for practical support avenues, such as promoting healthier meal options, exercise programs, and emotional encouragement for those affected by diabetes.
Key strategies to mitigate the risk of Type 2 diabetes include regular physical activity, mindful eating, weight management, stress control, and ongoing health screenings. Early identification of symptoms like excessive thirst, frequent urination, and slow-healing wounds is crucial for timely medical intervention.
In its ongoing efforts, Diabetes Fiji plans to expand screening services, community education, and support groups while working to advocate for more effective national policies against diabetes.
This recent push comes in light of alarming statistics shared previously, indicating that diabetes is responsible for many of the country’s amputations and contributes significantly to other serious health complications. The organization calls upon all sectors of society to rally together, much like the collaborative efforts seen in combating HIV over the years.
As the community strives for better health outcomes, there is hope that increasing awareness and preventive measures can lead to significant improvements in managing diabetes across Fiji.
