Fijian football players participating in both futsal and 11-a-side formats will now face a definitive choice regarding which code they will compete in during competitions organized by the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA). This change comes after a recent council meeting held in Vatuwaqa, Suva, where an amendment to transfer regulations was approved by the Board of Control.
According to the new guidelines presented in a board paper, while players can engage in both codes at the regional or district levels, they are restricted from participating in the national level for both. Specifically, registered players in a Fiji FA-organized futsal competition will solely be those belonging to the futsal code. “Any player that is playing at the futsal code at Fiji FA competition cannot overlap and also play at 11-a-side,” emphasized Fiji FA chief executive Mohammed Yusuf. He explained that players will need to decide on their commitment: choosing to participate as an 11-a-side player will preclude them from competing in futsal at the national level.
This decision aims to streamline competition rules and address the requirements for local leagues, as regional districts are encouraged to establish at least six clubs to support their futsal leagues. Consequently, footballers will have the flexibility to play both codes at district levels, but not simultaneously in national competitions.
The new rules are set against the backdrop of an upcoming busy season for Fiji football, particularly with Extra Bula FC’s participation in the OFC Pro League, which will showcase many prominent players in the sport. This scenario opens up pathways for emerging talents to shine in either the futsal or 11-a-side formats within the Fiji FA-organized events.
As the Fiji FA prepares for the start of its futsal zonal competition next month, these changes are anticipated to foster a more structured competitive environment and provide clarity for players aiming to make their mark in Fijian football.
