In a strategic move to enhance the growth and development of young football talents in Fiji, the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) is set to implement a new regulation for districts participating in the upcoming 2026 Extra Premier League and Extra Senior League competitions. The decision, which received approval from the Fiji FA Board, mandates that each competing district must incorporate three youth players in their 22-member match-day squad—specifically, two under-19 players and one under-17 player.
To promote authentic talent development, the Fiji FA has stipulated that at least one of these youth players must not only be included in the squad but also start and play the entire match. This initiative aims to provide young athletes with regular opportunities to compete at a senior level, thereby enhancing their skills and preparing them for future international challenges.
Fiji FA’s chief executive officer, Mohammed Yusuf, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “This is about preparing our young players for international football. This is to make sure youth players are not just named on the list but are actually playing.” The introduction of this requirement also serves a critical function for the national technical department. It will assist in scouting and identifying promising talent for the Fiji under-20 and under-17 national teams, especially as the under-17 team consistently participates in World Cup qualifiers.
This new regulation marks a significant step forward for Fijian football, fostering a stronger foundation for youth development that is sure to nurture the next generation of football stars and elevate the overall standard of the sport in the country.
