The Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) is taking a significant step towards enhancing youth development by launching school-based futsal leagues for under-17 and under-19 categories for both boys and girls. This initiative aims to foster participation in football at an early age, with competitions being organized solely through schools rather than clubs.
Fiji FA’s chief executive officer, Mohammed Yusuf, stated that the leagues will be structured on a zonal basis, allowing local schools to compete in their respective regions. He emphasized the Federation’s commitment to collaborating closely with schools to ensure their active participation in these leagues.
To alleviate logistical challenges for schools located far from competition sites, Fiji FA will offer transport subsidies. Yusuf highlighted that for schools in the Southern zone, such as those in Navua and Baulevu, support will be provided for travel expenses. Schools that are closer will handle their own transport costs but will also have the opportunity to compete for prize money, which will be awarded to the champions and finalists.
This initiative will extend to the Northern zone, benefiting schools in regions such as Nadogo and Seaqaqa, as well as to the Western zone, supporting schools from Rakiraki and the broader Nadroga area. The introduction of these leagues promises to not only enhance athletic skills among youth but also to instill teamwork and discipline, contributing positively to the overall development of young athletes in Fiji.
