A multi-faceted strategy combining mandatory school programs and enhanced community engagement is crucial for addressing the nation’s drug crisis. This sentiment was expressed by Tavua Town Council special administrator Rajendra Raghlu during a recent consultation on the Counter Narcotics Bill held at Tavualevu Village hall.

Mr. Raghlu highlighted the importance of differentiating between drug traffickers and individuals struggling with addiction. He proposed integrating narcotics education into the national school curriculum instead of piloting programs in specific regions. “We should make it compulsory in every school,” he stated, emphasizing the role of student councils in identifying and addressing issues related to drug use.

The administrator also underlined the need for these educational initiatives to reach all corners of Fiji, regardless of whether schools are located in urban, rural, or remote areas. This inclusivity, he believes, would significantly contribute to combating the drug crisis.

Mr. Raghlu further urged for community village meetings that prioritize youth voices, enabling a deeper understanding of the underlying factors contributing to drug use. “Children should be part of these discussions. We need to hear the reasons behind their choices. They often come from good families, yet may find themselves drawn to drugs due to various personal or familial challenges,” he shared. He acknowledged that feelings of rebellion or a lack of affection could drive youths toward substance use.

Despite recognizing the significant challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling drug-related issues, Mr. Raghlu remains hopeful that collective community efforts can help mitigate the problem. This collaborative approach, involving education and open dialogue, could prove pivotal in fostering a drug-free environment for future generations.
