The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has reported a series of successful enforcement operations as part of its intensified night-time monitoring strategy during the festive season. Over the past weeks, the commission conducted 90 nighttime inspections along with four additional surveillance and monitoring operations across the country. These efforts revealed four specific breaches related to consumer protection regulations.
As part of this proactive approach, the FCCC also referred nine health and food safety issues to relevant municipal health inspectors for further investigation and potential action. The inspections aim to ensure that retailers comply with price accuracy and maintain high standards for product quality during the extended trading hours associated with the holiday shopping season.
The commission is particularly vigilant regarding promotional and discounted items to prevent misleading pricing practices that could affect consumers. Moreover, the nighttime operations have been expanded to include jetties and ports, where enforcement officers scrutinize shipping service providers to address overloading issues and ensure adherence to regulated fares and freight charges.
The FCCC emphasizes that consumer protection is paramount at all times, whether shoppers are purchasing groceries late at night or travelers are boarding vessels early in the morning. The ongoing success of these night-time operations underscores the necessity of vigilant enforcement, and consumers are encouraged to report any suspected breaches to help maintain fair trading practices throughout the festive period.
The FCCC’s commitment to consumer rights and safety, especially during this busy shopping season, offers a hopeful outlook for protecting the interests of Fijian consumers.
