Meli Bainimarama, the son of Fiji’s former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, has been sentenced to 28 months in prison following a violent attack on his former girlfriend in Sydney, Australia. This assault resulted in severe injuries, including a ruptured eardrum.

At 38 years old, Bainimarama pleaded guilty to several offences tied to domestic violence, which include choking his ex-partner, punching her in the ear, and sharing intimate images of them without consent. During the sentencing at Parramatta Local Court, Magistrate Timothy Khoo imposed a 28-month jail term with a non-parole period of 14 months. Charges against him included three counts of assault causing bodily harm, two counts of choking without consent, and one count of stalking and intimidation.

Evidence presented during the hearing revealed that Bainimarama and the victim began their relationship in February 2022, with the violence reportedly starting that same month. In a particularly alarming incident, while being driven to the airport, he verbally attacked and physically assaulted his then-girlfriend, leading to her injuries.

The court also highlighted Bainimarama’s troubling history, noting that he had previously served seven months of a 10-month sentence for domestic violence-related offenses against another woman in 2023. While on bail for these offences, he further assaulted his estranged wife in their home.

The prosecution emphasized the danger he posed to the community due to a pattern of violent behavior in two consecutive relationships. Although Magistrate Khoo recognized Bainimarama’s efforts to improve himself, he expressed concern over his commission of serious domestic violence acts while awaiting trial.

Bainimarama is expected to be eligible for release in January 2026. This case serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding domestic violence and the vital importance of supporting victims in speaking out against such abuse.

It is hopeful to note that initiatives aimed at addressing domestic violence are receiving increased attention, potentially leading to more resources and support for affected individuals. Increasing awareness and encouraging open discussions about domestic violence could lead to a more understanding and supportive society.
