The Ministry of Health in Fiji has recently been given a significant boost in emergency healthcare services with a donation of 20 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) from Aus Railway Services. The handover of these life-saving devices took place earlier last week, with Mukesh Naidu, general manager of strategic supply and operations at Aus Railway Services, presenting the AEDs to Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu.
Dr. Lalabalavu announced that already, two AEDs have been installed in Rotuma and two others are currently operational in Fiji, specifically at the Fiji Pharmaceutical Biomedical Services in Suva and the health quarters in Nadi. He added that one of the AEDs has been established as the main unit, while efforts are underway to deploy the remaining devices to health centers throughout urban and rural areas.
Naidu emphasized the importance of AEDs as portable devices that can treat individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. He highlighted their user-friendly design, which allows them to analyze heart rhythms and, if necessary, deliver an electric shock to restore a normal heart rhythm. These devices are crucial during public events or gatherings, as they can provide immediate assistance in emergency situations, allowing critical time for transport to a hospital.
Dr. Lalabalavu expressed gratitude towards Aus Railway Services for their generous support, stating that these AEDs are set to play a vital role in saving lives and enhancing Fiji’s overall emergency healthcare response.
In summary, this initiative marks a progressive step towards better emergency healthcare in Fiji, demonstrating a commitment to safeguard community health and deliver timely intervention in critical situations. Such donations not only improve medical readiness but also foster a sense of community responsibility for health and safety.
