Fiji is poised to become the official host of the regional policing centres of excellence as part of the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI). These centres will provide training, support, research, best practices, and leadership in various policing areas.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made this announcement during his keynote speech at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 Pacific Policing Event held in Sagafili Village, Samoa last week.
Mr. Rabuka expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m happy that Fiji can put its hands forward and up, as host for one of these centres.” He emphasized that Fiji possesses the necessary facilities and infrastructure to support this regional initiative.
The PPI aims to standardize policing arrangements throughout the Pacific, focusing on three main pillars: Regional Centres of Excellence, a Deployable Police Peacekeeping Support Group (PPSG), and a Coordination Hub situated in Brisbane.
Additionally, Mr. Rabuka highlighted the potential to enhance Australian support for the Black Rock training facility in Nadi, which serves not only as a military installation but also as a center for police and disaster relief efforts.
