Joel Abraham has urged the public to refocus on the crucial issue of electricity pricing following a surprising reversal of his appointment as Chair of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) just one day after it was announced. Originally appointed on Christmas Eve, Abraham’s term was short-lived as the Finance Minister reinstated Cecil Browne as Chair.
Reports indicate that Abraham intended to review the FCCC’s recent decision to raise electricity tariffs, which is set to take effect from the New Year. In his statement, Abraham emphasized that the matter of electricity pricing impacts every household, business, and worker across Fiji, underscoring its significance in the lives of citizens.
He advocated for independent regulation, transparency, and accountability in the sector, calling for discussions to center on whether the proposed tariff adjustments are fair, justified, and affordable. Despite the abrupt change in his position, Abraham expressed his commitment to serving Fiji and indicated that further statements regarding the electricity tariffs from Electricity Fiji Limited would be forthcoming.
This development highlights ongoing concerns about energy pricing in Fiji, a topic that resonates deeply with the public as it influences daily life and economic stability. Abraham’s commitment to transparency may encourage a broader dialogue about fair pricing and regulatory practices in energy distribution, aiming to benefit the community as a whole.
