The Fijian private sector has expressed strong support for the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (FCCC) decision to suspend a proposed increase in electricity tariffs, which was originally sought by Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) and aimed for a significant rise of 37%. This suspension will allow for further consultations with key stakeholders, a move that has been welcomed by business leaders in the region.

Edward Bernard, CEO of the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF), highlighted the organization’s concerns regarding the lack of consultation prior to the proposal. Bernard noted that the absence of dialogue with major contributors to the nation’s economy raised significant apprehension within the private sector. In a recent statement to Fiji One News, he indicated that FCEF will be preparing a formal submission informed by consultations with its membership base, emphasizing the importance of inclusive discussions.

The potential increase in tariff, which would have further escalated utility costs, is a pressing issue for businesses already facing rising operational expenses. Bernard stressed that electricity costs are a critical component of overall business expenditure and that any increase could adversely affect business growth, investment strategies, and Fiji’s competitive position in the market.

FCEF also pointed out that the Commission’s decision stems from its internal review of EFL’s proposal and reflects a broader understanding of recent economic challenges affecting the country. The Federation believes that facilitating consultations is essential for the FCCC to gather valuable insights that will lead to a more balanced and well-informed decision making process.

This proactive engagement between the Commission and the private sector highlights a commitment to fostering a collaborative environment that can potentially benefit the overall economic landscape in Fiji. The outcome of these consultations could pave the way for solutions that enhance both the sustainability of utility providers and the affordability of services for businesses and consumers alike.
