The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) has urged for a reevaluation of cadet training in schools and proposed significant changes to the national curriculum, expressing concerns that the Education Bill 2025 may inadvertently support militarization and perpetuate colonial ideologies.

In a recent submission to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Justice, Law, and Human Rights, Miliana Tarai, manager of legal services at FWCC, characterized cadet training as an intrusive introduction of military values into educational settings. She emphasized that this initiative could transform schools into environments where militaristic beliefs—such as hierarchy, obedience, and the validation of force—are normalized.

Tarai pointed out the historical context of Fiji, noting that the nation has witnessed four coups, three of which were orchestrated by the military. She stated, “The classroom should not be a place to reinforce militarisation, especially for a country that has experienced such turmoil.”

Furthermore, Tarai highlighted the persistent use of educational frameworks rooted in colonial practices. She argued that students are often not given a comprehensive understanding of Fiji’s political history. “Fiji continues to educate our children through structures designed during colonial occupation, structures that were never meant to serve local interests or preserve cultural heritage,” she remarked.

Echoing the need for reform, Tarai insisted that the curriculum must reflect an authentic portrayal of Fiji’s history, free from the distortions imposed by those in authority. She appealed to lawmakers to ensure that the education system nurtures critical thinking, historical accuracy, and promotes democratic values, which are vital for the country’s future.

This call for reform signals a hopeful direction towards fostering a more inclusive and accurate educational environment that could empower future generations in Fiji.
