Major-General Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), has issued a stark warning regarding the escalating drug crisis in Fiji, describing it as an existential threat that is already making its presence felt across families, communities, and the nation at large. His remarks came during the end-of-year Commanders Parade at the Force Training Group in Nasinu.

Maj-Gen Kalouniwai referred to recent statements made by Brigadier-General Gadai, who publicly discussed the grave consequences of drug abuse, particularly highlighting the situation in Nadi. While acknowledging Brig-Gen Gadai’s well-intentioned concerns about the devastating impact of drugs on society, the Major-General noted that Gadai had breached the established chain of command, leading to a verbal reprimand for his actions. Gadai has since apologized and recognized his error.

Despite the protocol violation, Maj-Gen Kalouniwai affirmed that the essence of Gadai’s message resonates widely with the public, reflecting the harsh realities faced by citizens. He emphasized that the call for action against the drug crisis echoes the sentiments of families and individuals across the country, serving as a poignant representation of the fear and urgency felt by many.

“This situation represents the truth. It embodies the concerns of every father, mother, brother, and sister. It reflects the voice of the silent majority who are yearning for solutions to a rapidly escalating problem that is taking a toll on our nation,” Maj-Gen Kalouniwai declared.

He further highlighted the broader frustrations shared by the populace, as they demand effective security and tangible solutions while grappling with various social issues such as abuse, corruption, favoritism, and racism. These challenges, he noted, only exacerbate the difficulties in addressing the drug threat that is confronting Fiji.

The Major-General’s comments serve as a call to action for authorities to not only acknowledge the drug crisis but to take practical steps toward mitigating its effects and restoring public trust in leadership. With dedicated efforts from both military and civilian sectors, there is hope for a collective response that can foster a safer and healthier environment for the people of Fiji.
