Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Filipo Tarakinikini, has passionately defended the nation’s school cadet system, asserting that its removal would undermine national unity and hinder character development among the youth. As debates arise around the program’s future, Tarakinikini has issued a challenge to those advocating for its abolition, questioning the viability of alternative systems that could nurture discipline, service, and equal opportunities for every child.

In his remarks, Tarakinikini posed critical questions to critics: “What institution will teach discipline to every child, regardless of family background? What program will provide students with equal chances to realize their strengths and roles within the community?” He cautioned that a reliance on traditional academic education alone could lead Fiji towards fragmentation rather than success.

Highlighting the need for improvement in the cadet program rather than its cancellation, Tarakinikini asked, “When did ‘this isn’t working well enough’ become an excuse to stop trying instead of a call to do better?” He underscored the importance of the cadet system’s objectives, emphasizing that while the delivery may need adjustments, the overall purpose remains crucial for fostering responsible citizenship and nation-building.

Tarakinikini clarified that the cadet program is not intended to militarize students but rather to instill a sense of community and citizenship. “We owe our young people a quality foundation for life—not to create soldiers, but to foster informed citizens,” he stated. He called for adequate resources and competent delivery to ensure that the program is genuinely effective.

The representative concluded by questioning the collective willingness to invest the necessary efforts and resources into the cadet program, urging that abandoning it due to inadequate support would be a disservice to Fiji’s future. Tarakinikini’s remarks highlight a commitment to both improving educational systems and nurturing well-rounded individuals who will contribute positively to society.
