Jaishree Pala is setting her sights on joining the national darts team following her impressive run as the runner-up in the women’s division of the Extra Fiji National Singles Darts Championship, which concluded on Sunday. The two-day event, held at the Fiji Club and United Club, attracted darts enthusiasts from across the country.
Having only begun her darts journey a few years ago, Pala expressed pride in her achievements. Inspired by her husband, an experienced player with over 15 years of experience in the sport, she decided to give darts a try and dedicated herself to practicing at home under his guidance.
Pala noted the increasing popularity of darts in Fiji, highlighting the promising talent of young players such as 13-year-old Shriya Reddy, who finished in fourth place. “That’s a big achievement for someone that young and it shows the sport has a bright future,” she remarked.
The championship served as a pivotal opportunity for players, as the top 20 performers will potentially represent Fiji at the South Pacific Darts Championship, scheduled to take place in the Cook Islands in two years. Pala’s performance follows her previous participation in the South Pacific Darts Championship, and she looks forward to possibly competing again on an international level.
The tournament concluded with Atelini Umu taking first place in the women’s division, follow by Pala, Naomi Cavasiga in third, and Reddy in fourth. In the men’s division, Roneet Narayan claimed victory, with Warren Ashcroft and Nathan Kumar securing second and third places, respectively.
The event reflects a growing momentum for darts in Fiji, indicating an encouraging future for newer players and the sport overall. With ongoing support from sponsors like Extra Supermarket, the development of darts in the region seems poised for a bright and exciting trajectory ahead.
