Customs officers in Fiji are being acknowledged for their essential role as a frontline defense in safeguarding the nation’s borders, economy, and national security. During the International Customs Day celebrations held in Suva, Minister for Finance Esrom Immanuel emphasized the growing importance of customs officers amidst the complexities of global trade and security issues.
The Minister highlighted that every action taken by customs personnel at the border has significant national implications. He stated, “Across the world and here at home, customs officers stand at the intersection of trade facilitation and border security. Every container examined, every passenger assessed, every document verified represents a decision that carries national consequences.”
Immanuel commended the officers for their critical task of balancing the facilitation of legitimate trade while remaining vigilant against illegal activities that jeopardize the country’s safety and financial resources.
Malakai Nayaga, Chair of the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) Board, reinforced the importance of strong governance, integrity, and professionalism in maintaining public confidence in border operations. He articulated that vigilance is about judgement and responsibility, stating, “Commitment is not just about duty; it is about values, integrity, and service over self,” highlighting the broader implications of customs duties within Fijian society.
Joana Duabaubau, an award-winning customs officer, expressed that her recognition is a testament to the collective efforts of her colleagues. “It is not only a personal recognition but a collective team effort. I am truly grateful to the organization, the CEO, the Director of Border, the Executive Leadership Team, and all managers in the Customs Management Team for recognizing the work we do to protect our borders, safeguard our revenue, and facilitate legitimate trade,” she remarked.
This year’s International Customs Day theme, “Customs Protecting Society Through Vigilance and Commitment,” underscores the vital contributions customs officers make not only to national development but also to community safety. This recognition serves to inspire an ongoing commitment to excellence in customs operations, fostering a secure environment for all Fijians.
