The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) has announced the findings of its Job Evaluation Exercise (JEE), which has identified 81 new positions in administration, technical, and ranking officer roles. This initiative was backed by the Cabinet and subsequently endorsed by Parliament through the national budget for the current financial year.
Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga addressed Parliament, emphasizing that traditional notions of promotion and demotion will not be applicable. He explained that changes in an officer’s rank will be determined by their new posting, which will depend on their performance and the needs of the organization.
Mr. Turaga highlighted the importance of updating the organizational structure to incorporate these new roles and revise Human Resources policies accordingly. He pointed out that this adjustment aims to align salaries with the experience and qualifications required for each position, reflecting the demands of the roles these officers undertake.
The last time a JEE was conducted was approximately 40 years ago, making this update critical. The process has allowed for clearer job descriptions for various officer roles, and an updated organizational chart has been developed to display the new positions, which were not addressed under the previous administration.
This initiative represents a crucial step forward for the FCS, aiming to enhance operational efficiency and employee satisfaction. By modernizing its structure and policies, the organization not only responds to contemporary challenges but also sets the groundwork for improved job clarity and performance accountability.
This move can be seen as a positive development for the Fijian correctional system, promising a more responsive and effective framework for its officers that better meets the demands of the current landscape while focusing on merit-based progression.
