The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) has completed a Job Evaluation Exercise (JEE) that has resulted in the creation of 81 new positions within administration, technical, and officer ranks. This initiative received Cabinet approval and was supported by Parliament through the current national budget.

During a recent address to Parliament, Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga clarified that traditional forms of promotions or demotions will not be acknowledged. Instead, the movement within the rank structure will now be based on the specific post an officer is assigned to, taking into account their performance and the needs of the organization.

Minister Turaga explained that the restructuring of the organization includes updates to Human Resources policies and the identification of new personnel, with plans to introduce these 81 positions over the next three years. He emphasized the necessity for the pay structure to reflect the qualifications and responsibilities associated with various roles, noting that the last job evaluation exercise was conducted approximately 40 years ago.

This recent JEE has streamlined job descriptions across different officer roles and developed a new organizational chart to display these changes, something that was not accomplished in previous administrations.

Overall, this initiative signals a promising step towards modernizing the Fiji Corrections Services, aligning roles with contemporary practices, and enhancing the organization’s efficiency. The introduction of new positions and a more structured approach can lead to improved job satisfaction among staff, ultimately benefiting the service’s operational capabilities.
