The Fiji Corrections Service is making proactive strides towards sustainability by exploring potential development projects within its facilities. Recently, Commissioner of Corrections Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa visited the Indian High Commission to discuss the proposal for implementing solar energy systems across Fiji’s correctional centers.

This initiative is part of the Fiji Corrections Service’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact, increasing energy efficiency, and cutting operational costs. The introduction of solar energy would represent a major advancement in incorporating renewable energy solutions in the corrections sector and aligns with Fiji’s broader aspirations for sustainable development and energy independence.

During the meeting, Dr. Nakarawa expressed gratitude for the Indian Government’s ongoing support, emphasizing the mutual values of innovation and sustainability shared by both nations. His Excellency P. S. K. Karthigeyan, the High Commissioner of India, confirmed India’s readiness to collaborate, highlighting their expertise in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure.

This visit serves as a foundational step for future cooperation and technical discussions. Both parties agreed to continue their dialogue and share technical information to evaluate the feasibility and strategy for the solarisation project.

The Fiji Corrections Service is dedicated to embracing modern, eco-friendly practices while fulfilling its primary responsibility of providing safe and secure correctional environments.

The focus on renewable energy in Fiji’s correctional facilities not only represents a significant move towards sustainability but also sets a positive example of how governmental bodies are prioritizing environmental responsibility.
