The Fiji Corrections Service recently hosted a media tour at its Naboro facility, aimed at fostering transparency and public awareness about its operations. Journalists from various media organizations were guided through five Special Business Units: Poultry, Piggery, Bakery, Farm, and Joinery, providing them a unique glimpse into the productive activities carried out by inmates alongside corrections officers.
Reporters observed the diligent work performed within these units as well as the facility’s maintenance, health services, and monitoring systems. Joel Ragoneliwa from Fiji Television Limited described the tour as an enlightening experience that will enhance his reporting on the Corrections Service’s initiatives. Similarly, Lusi Banuve, a senior journalist from Mai TV, also expressed that the visit shifted her perspective on inmates, highlighting the considerable efforts made by both the prisoners and corrections staff towards rehabilitation.
Acting Commissioner Auta Moceisuva has indicated that the Corrections Service plans to initiate quarterly media briefings, aiming to further illuminate the significant roles its officers play and their contributions to society. This proactive approach is seen as a positive step towards improving the public’s understanding of the Corrections Service and its rehabilitation programs.
