Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma has urged authorities to suspend a contractor engaged by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) after residents of Naqiliso Settlement expressed serious concerns over recent construction activities that resulted in flooding. The call for action followed a weekend incident where the contractor’s work obstructed essential drainage, prompting the community to voice their frustrations.

In a social media statement, Sharma acknowledged the Assistant Minister for Health’s prompt response and thanked the media and relevant authorities for their timely intervention regarding these issues. He emphasized that constructive dialogue had played a pivotal role in bringing attention to the community’s plight.

“Dialogue and debate led to action. I understand that there are endless issues, but there is always hope to act on them for the people of Fiji,” Sharma said, reflecting a positive outlook on the capacity for change through civic engagement.

The MP also brought the matter to the floor of Parliament, relaying the distressing experiences faced by residents at the hands of the contractor, who allegedly informed them that portions of their homes and a place of worship would be demolished. He deemed such behavior unacceptable, asserting that the contractor should learn humility and respect for the community.

Sharma reiterated his demand for immediate action, calling for the contractor’s suspension, stating, “I call for the suspension of this contractor, who is working for the Fiji Corrections Service.”

The situation in Naqiliso Settlement has captivated public attention, underlining the impact of construction works on local communities. As citizens rally for a resolution to prevent future flooding, the urgency behind addressing these concerns highlights the vital need for accountability and respect in governmental projects. The hopes for a resolution reflect the community’s resilience and the potential for positive change through advocacy.
