The Commissioner for the Northern Division of Fiji, Uraia Rainima, has expressed concern over the lack of proactive relocation by residents during the recent Tropical Cyclone Rae, despite multiple advisories urging safety. He reported that some individuals were only requesting evacuation assistance late at night as floodwaters began to rise, presenting significant safety risks for both the residents and rescue teams.

At a recent press briefing, Rainima explained that responding to late-night evacuation requests was dangerous, as crossing flooded areas was too risky for emergency personnel. He urged the public to heed warnings regarding heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides associated with the upcoming Cyclone Seru.

“I urge everyone to move to evacuation centres while it is still safe to do so,” said Rainima. He emphasized the importance of staying updated with weather reports and acting promptly if floodwaters begin to rise. Rainima expressed hope that the anticipated heavy rainfall would not exacerbate the already challenging conditions with cyclone-related flooding.

This situation echoes previous safety advisories put out by the Commissioner’s office, reflecting a consistent message about the importance of preparedness and community cooperation when facing adverse weather. Residents have been reminded to avoid flooded areas, prepare essential supplies in case of evacuation, and protect livestock by relocating them to higher ground.

The latest developments highlight the necessity of community awareness and action in mitigating risks during severe weather events. With the potential threats posed by Cyclone Seru on the horizon, Rainima’s office continues to prioritize timely communication and support for residents. It is a crucial moment for the community to come together, take necessary precautions, and ensure everyone’s safety during this trying time.
