The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is currently handling 12 crucial cases, some of which were initiated prior to the establishment of the Commission of Inquiry (COI). Of these cases, six are awaiting legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), five remain under investigation, and one has been filed due to insufficient evidence. This latter case involves a complaint against a former FICAC Commissioner accused of leaking confidential voter registration information in 2024. The ODPP found the evidence lacking, leading to the case’s closure.
The six pending cases, awaiting independent legal counsel, include two filed in 2024. Meanwhile, four cases from 2025 are focused on alleged abuse of office, obstruction, and perverting justice. Among the ongoing investigations, three were lodged after the COI’s proceedings, including a prominent one against a senior COI official.
The CID is prioritizing these matters due to their national significance, ensuring meticulous attention before forwarding them to the DPP’s office. Past efforts and community hopes underscore an emphasis on transparency and upholding ethical governance practices in Fiji. This commitment reflects a broader intent to enhance public trust and ensure accountability within public institutions.
The inquiries into these cases are part of a continuing pursuit to address governance concerns surfaced by the COI, with the broader goal of instigating reform and reinforcing ethical standards in public service appointments. These efforts signal Fiji’s determination to address public concerns and improve institutional integrity, fostering a more transparent political environment.
