Chiefs from the Northern region have expressed their support for Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Tui Cakau, as the next President of Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced on Tuesday that Ratu Naiqama has been nominated by the Government for the role.
Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, the Tui Nadogo, voiced his support for the Government’s nominee but emphasized the importance of involving chiefs in the decision-making process. He stressed the need for appointments to reflect the voice of the Great Council of Chiefs to ensure proper representation for the iTaukei people, the traditional custodians of the land.
Tui Wailevu, Ratu Joseva Maivalili, indicated his desire for a leader who embodies justice and righteousness but chose to remain neutral regarding Ratu Naiqama’s nomination. He believes that Fiji requires a leader capable of uniting all districts and provinces, as well as one who promotes equality among the populace.
Acknowledging the contributions of the outgoing President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, Ratu Maivalili wished him well for his future endeavors. He remarked on the significance of having a President who respects divine guidance and adheres to Christian values, which are fundamental to the nation.
Ratu Maivalili called for a visionary leader to guide the nation towards stability and expressed their commitment to respecting the upcoming President, regardless of any differences in leadership style from previous leaders. Efforts to reach Ratu Jone Qomate, the Tui Labasa, for his insights on the matter were unsuccessful.
