Leaders from the northern region have expressed their backing for the Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as the next President of Fiji. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that Ratu Naiqama is the Government’s official nominee for the position.
Tui Nadogo, Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, showed support for the Government’s nominee but emphasized the need for the involvement of chiefs in the decision-making process. He acknowledged the Government’s authority and stressed that appointments should reflect input from the Great Council of Chiefs to ensure the representation of the iTaukei people, who are considered the land’s custodians.
Tui Wailevu, Ratu Joseva Maivalili, stated his preference for a candidate who embodies justice and righteousness for the presidential role but chose to remain neutral regarding Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu. He highlighted the need for a leader capable of uniting Fiji’s diverse districts and provinces, pointing out that the public desires a leader who promotes equality.
Ratu Maivalili commended the current President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, for his leadership over the past four years, wishing him well in his future endeavors. He underscored the importance of the next President being a God-fearing individual who respects the Christian principles that underpin the nation.
He expressed hope that the new President would offer a different approach to leadership while still earning respect across divisions. “We need a visionary leader to take this nation forward with a stable style of leadership,” he remarked.
Attempts to reach Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, for comments were unsuccessful.
