The people of Fiji are calling for a thorough and lawful public consultation regarding electricity tariffs, as emphasized by Kini Marawa, the Executive Director of Diabetes Fiji. His remarks come in response to the expedited awareness initiative being conducted by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC).

Marawa acknowledges the FCCC’s efforts but argues that simply setting up awareness booths for a brief period does not equate to meaningful public engagement. He highlights the significant impact that electricity tariffs have on the cost of living, small businesses, families, and vulnerable populations who are already facing challenges. He insists that decisions of such magnitude should not be made hastily.

According to Marawa, providing awareness after decisions have already begun is not a genuine consultation process but rather a mere act of information-sharing, which fundamentally differs from actual consultation. He questions the absence of rule of law and the principles of people-centred governance that have been long advocated, emphasizing that true consultation requires adequate time, transparency, dialogue, and fairness.

Marawa is urging the Fiji Government and the Prime Minister to direct the FCCC to implement a formal and structured public consultation process. This would enable communities, civil society groups, businesses, and vulnerable populations to have an authentic opportunity to voice their opinions. He believes that collaborating with citizens should not be perceived as a delay but as a vital expression of democracy, particularly in matters that influence daily survival.

Additionally, Marawa cautions against normalizing rushed processes, especially when people’s livelihoods are on the line. He stresses that public consultation is not just a procedural formality but an essential component of governance.

FBC News has reached out to the FCCC for their perspective on the concerns raised by Marawa. This ongoing dialogue highlights the importance of inclusive governance and the need for timely public consultation in policy-making that affects all Fijians.
