Fiji’s long-awaited victory at the Dubai Sevens tournament has finally arrived, ending a 22-tournament drought. The team, coached by Osea Kolinisau, triumphed over Spain with a score of 19-5 in a thrilling final held at the Sevens Stadium in the United Arab Emirates.
This victory is particularly significant for Kolinisau, as he captained Fiji to their last win in Dubai back in 2015. The match started with veteran Paul Pla scoring the first try for Spain within the first two minutes, putting pressure on the Fijian team. However, just before halftime, Player of the Final Filipe Sauturaga leveled the score with a well-executed try for Fiji.
The second half saw Fiji dominating the game, showcasing their determination and tactical prowess. They secured their win with two additional tries scored by Captain Jerry Matana and Ilikimi Torosi, clinching the much-needed victory and a place on the podium.
This victory not only marks a significant achievement for the Fijian team but also serves as a reminder of their resilience and capability to reclaim their position among the best in rugby. It offers hope for future competitions as they build on this success.
