A heavy rain alert is currently in effect for Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and surrounding smaller islands, as well as the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. This alert has recently been expanded to encompass the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, along with the western and northern regions of Viti Levu, including areas from Nadi, Lautoka, and Ba through Tavua to Rakiraki.

Weather officials have indicated that a trough of low pressure is influencing the weather, bringing widespread cloud cover and rain to the country from the north. This trough is expected to gradually affect the rest of Fiji through Sunday.

In detail, regions such as Vanua Levu, Taveuni, the nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups can expect occasional rain accompanied by a few thunderstorms, with the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. Additional rain and isolated thunderstorms with heavy downpours are predicted for the Sigatoka–Korolevu, Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nasinu areas, as well as parts of the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups. Conditions are likely to intensify from later tonight.

Authorities have issued warnings regarding potential impacts, including flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone informal settlements, which could affect communities and businesses, causing disruptions in traffic. Surface flooding may occur in urban areas with inadequate drainage, and there could be isolated power outages and interruptions to essential services in severely affected areas.

The public is urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions, especially in areas prone to flooding. It is vital for residents to remain informed and prepared as the weather conditions evolve. This proactive approach can help minimize the risks associated with the anticipated heavy rainfall and its consequences.
