Beyond the headline

A trough of low pressure is affecting the Fiji group and will continue to bring cloud, frequent showers and isolated thunderstorms through tonight and into Sunday. The main risk is isolated heavy falls that may produce flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Winds are moderate and seas range from moderate to rough in places.

Through to midnight, most districts can expect occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms. Isolated heavy falls are possible and could lead to flash flooding of low-lying areas. Today’s winds are moderate from the northwest with moderate seas. Conditions are generally unsettled across the group and the activity is forecast to persist into Sunday, when showers and a few thunderstorms will continue over most places before easing to more scattered showers later in the day. Winds are expected to be northeast to northwesterly early on Sunday, turning and becoming predominantly southeasterly later, with seas rising to moderate to rough.

Central Viti Levu and nearby areas will see regular showers and isolated thunderstorms. For Navua, Suva and Nausori expect temperatures around a minimum of 23°C and a maximum near 30°C, with similar conditions holding for Sigatoka and the Coral Coast. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba will also have occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms, with highs around 30–31°C. The Yasawa and Mamanuca groups remain warm and unsettled, with daytime temperatures up to about 32°C and the chance of thunderstorms.

The northern and eastern islands remain at particular risk of heavier, more persistent falls. Labasa, Savusavu, Taveuni and Nabouwalu are forecast to have occasional showers and a few thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls that could lead to localized flooding; daytime highs are generally in the high 20s to low 30s. Lau and Lomaiviti groups are also likely to see a similar pattern of showers and isolated heavy falls. Kadavu should expect occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms and the outlook indicates the possibility of heavier falls on Sunday.

Rotuma continues to be influenced by the trough, with occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms, moderate to fresh northwesterly winds and moderate to rough seas. Sunday there may be cloudier periods with some showers and possible thunderstorms. Residents and visitors in low-lying or flood-prone areas should take care during heavy downpours, and mariners should be prepared for moderate to rough seas and changing wind directions. Keep an eye on updates from the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi as conditions evolve.
