A trough of low pressure over the islands, combined with a moist northeast wind flow, will keep the Fiji group generally unsettled through the next couple of days. Expect cloudy periods with showers in many areas and afternoon to evening thunderstorms producing locally heavy falls. Low-lying and flood-prone locations should be prepared for the possibility of rapid runoff and flash flooding where heavy rain occurs.
Today, cloud and showers are likely about Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra, Rakiraki–Tavua–Ba, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau, Lomaiviti, the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, and Kadavu. Elsewhere conditions will be partly cloudy with afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms; some of these thunderstorms may produce heavy rainfall. Winds this period will be moderate from the northeast, with moderate seas.
Tomorrow and into the outlook for Sunday, cloudy periods with some showers are expected to persist about Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra, eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, southern Bua, Taveuni and nearby islands, as well as Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu. Most other districts should be fine apart from the usual afternoon or evening showers. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms with heavy falls are likely over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu on both days. Winds will ease to moderate easterlies and seas remain moderate.
Rotuma continues to be affected by the trough and will see cloudy periods with showers and isolated thunderstorms, with the chance of heavy falls. Winds there are expected to be moderate to fresh from the east and seas moderate to rough. Conditions around Rotuma warrant particular attention from mariners and anyone travelling in exposed waters.
Local town notes: Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect temperatures around 25°C to 32°C tomorrow and on Sunday. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba have a forecast low of about 24°C with a daytime maximum near 33°C tomorrow, easing slightly to around 25°C–32°C on Sunday. Sigatoka and the Coral Coast will see afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy falls today and similar showers into the weekend (minima about 24–25°C, maxima around 32°C). Residents and travellers are advised to take care in low-lying and flood-prone areas during heavy downpours, avoid driving through flooded roads, and be aware that outdoor plans may be disrupted by thunderstorms.
